Seasonal Geas: a new solution for tournaments

Posted on 20th April, 2026 at 2:29pm CST
A little late to the party, but this year a new feature was introduced to the chinese local tournaments — seasonal geas cards. They are time-limited and proxy legal, and allow for more flexible deck-building for non-meta decks, giving decks a way to fight the most popular cards and decks of the format.

As some would notice, these 3 geas cards say "Season 2" on them. Season 1 happened last year, and featured only one seasonal geas, completely identical to "Extra Oath of Protection".
This one's purpose is go give all decks an option to fight "Guang Gong, Ascended Legend". A powerhouse of a unit with amazing stats, and most importantly an ability to remove 3 cards from a players hand and/or in play. Being a card that can be easily cycled into in drive-based rulers, it put hand-based rulers to a huge disadvantage, but it's not necessarily a ban-worthy card yet, as it is a level 5 card, and including 4 of these eats up a significant level cap in decks.
Therefore, this seasonal geas was created to help hand rulers to not lose their whole hand forever, but making enemy ruler's STK bigger. Which, to be honest, is not a huge price to pay, if at all, as many decks nowdays tend to have many defensive options.

Now, let's look at the newer geas cards. Extra Oath of Resurgence allows you to, essentially, heal 3 life once per game, if you are not playing any of the current meta decks or meta-defining cards. As a reminder, losing a game is a trigger that is put on the gate to be resolved, and you can use instant actions in responce to you losing. Also, technically it doesn't "heal" for 3, but return cards to the bottom of the deck. There are some effects that can prevent you from either healing or moving cards outside of your damage except by healing, so you should be aware of those. As an extra bonus for Genesis Summoning and Reginleif decks, this geas comes with an extra bonus of returning summoning lost targets into the deck, so it might be a good idea sometimes to use it early.

Extra Oath of Transcendance is an interesting one, as it basically soft-erratas some deck-defining units that feel underpowered in the current format. Transcendance and Resurgence both serve a similar role — give off-meta decks a push to be viable against the meta. But now you also have a choice: do you want to have a guaranteed heal for 3, or to power-up your boss unit. Transcendance also doesn't prevent you from adding meta-defining cards into your deck, unlike Resurgence, so it all depends on your personal preference and what kind of deck you want to build.

This article is coming out very close to the end of Season 2, so it might be not too long before we see the new seasonal geas. Will they simply prolong these three for another season, introduce new ones, or change the current ones in any way? We will learn soon enough.
