10+ Competitive Decks in Set 1

Posted on 2nd November, 2020 at 3:38pm CST
Before we dive into today's batch of Ikeda tweets, let's talk about the cards we got information on from them.

All Things Must Die (2020GB01-077 2*)
Faction: Yomajin Front
Card Type: Event
Level: 1
Attribute(s): Combat Technique
Effect: [CNT] Put this in the cemetery.
(unreadable) ... gets [Counterattack]
Flavor Text: Impermanence. Or at least the body ends.

The important takeaway with our current information on the card is of course the [CNT] effect, which we previous saw in Absolute Barrier. As we talked about in our article on that news, given Volnar's lean towards defensive effects, it might have been an effect specifically for Volnar, so its nice to see that its in more factions. In all likelihood, this effect will be seen on 1 card in every color.

Normal 4* version

High Rarity Pack version

Uber Rare version

Demon Dragon, Viola Fluvdus (2020GB01-003 4*/2020GB01-UR02 4*)
Faction: Volnar
Card Type: Unit
Level: 3
Attribute(s): Dragon, Dragon Lord, Darkness
Attack: 7
HP: 6
Strike: 3
Effect: [Abyss Symphonia] Condition: Choose a Level 0, 1, 2, and 3 from your cemetery...(unreadable)
  • (unreadable)
  • When this is Special Summoned by [Abyss Summon], destroy all other units.
Flavor Text: Get mad so you become crazy.

  • The ace unit for Abyss Summon from the main set! While its Abyss Symphonia condition isn't fully readable, what we can see is likely enough to know the full requirements. Instead of requiring a specific number of Darkness cards, it requires 1 of all 4 Levels. Of course its also possible that it has a set number of Darkness cards higher than 4 you need, and there just needs to be 1 of each Level among them. Regardless, given the more specific condition, its very easy to see another Abyss Symphonia unit, like the Starter Deck's Vastorus Rex, being run alongside it. Even more so since Vastorus boasts many qualities Viola does not, like its defensive [CNT] effect, recovering 1 life when played, and being able to destroy any type of card instead of only units.

Make no mistake though, Viola seems very powerful, and a worthy ace for the deck. Higher Strike than Vastorus, and it can be summoned to the defensive zone to theoretically allow you to utilize its effect while forcing your opponent to deal with the beefy body instead of potentially leaving it to the side. Not to mention, whatever that completely unknown effect might do.

    Normal 4* version

    High Rarity Pack version

    Uber Rare version

    White Bone Princess (2020GB01-123 4*/2020GB01-UR17 4*)
    Faction: Exvader
    Card Type: Unit
    Level: 2
    Attribute(s): God
    Attack: 4
    HP: 4
    Strike: 2
Effect: [CNT] Your opponent chooses one of their units, and destroys it.
Flavor Text (Normal): Its expression does not reflect its heart, and its form does not reflect its truth.
Flavor Text (Uber): The scariest thing is a person who looks like a person, but lacks a heart.

Its been quite some time since we saw any Exvader cards! Since before this site launched, in fact. White Bone Princess sports a powerful [CNT], though since your opponent gets to choose, it won't be very effective at disrupting attack patterns as long as the opponent's 1st attack is with a unit. That CNT effect also seems like it taxes its on field playability pretty significantly, especially given than Omen Butterfly suggested Exvader gets to work with higher stat totals. At the very least I suppose its 4 HP puts it just out of range of a number of things we've seen, like the common 3 ATK Level 0s, or Honoikazuchi's on attack.

Also of note is that the Uber Rare version of White Bone Princess has a different flavor text! Personally I've been looking forward to seeing more of Exvader's creepy brand of flavor text, so I'm excited to get 2 flavor texts with this singular reveal, but in general its just cool to see that Uber Rares can get a different flavor text and give further insight on the depicted character. Though as can be seen on Viola, sometimes Uber Rares might not get any flavor text at all.

The Gate Ruler rules will be published on November 27th. At the same time, about 15000 pre-built decks of 50 cards will be distributed for free so you can experience the game. Distribution method will be announced later.
On the same day, image data of the deck will be available for download from the official site, and will also be available to print at convenience stores. Anyone will be able to get the deck by just going to a convenience store, typing in the password, and paying the print cost. (Contents of the printed deck are the same as the demo deck)

After 1 or 2 weeks, new image data will be released and you will be able to modify the deck. These are, of course, not real cards but will be usable in tournaments for a limited time. The expanded card pool is 2-3 times the size, and its quite enjoyable with just the cards available for free.

Please enjoy the world of Gate Ruler starting November 27th.

    Rule Release Date

The Gate Ruler rules will be released at the same time as 50 card (+ α) pre-built decks will be distributed for players to learn the rules.

    (Source)

Deck size is confirmed for 50 cards! This was a pretty safe assumption, since the Starter Decks being unable to be made of cards at maximum copies, and maximum copies being confirmed for 4, meant that it couldn't be 40 or 60, but full confirmation is nonetheless good.

Also its interesting how only α is mentioned, could this mean that World Master β is one of the additions coming in the expanded card pool?

It seems there are some people who recently learned about Gate Ruler and have misunderstood some things, so please spread these clarifications.
  • Target audience is 14 years or older, mainly those in their 20s and 30s, not aimed at children
  • Being for adults does not mean eroticism and moe will be used, but quite the opposite. It is for adults who want a TCG without eroticism.
  • Some people think that a game for adults is skill-based instead of luck-based, but that's a mistake. Gate Ruler includes both luck and skill.
  • We will provide valuable promotions for tournament winners, but in Gate Ruler we will do the same for things other than just the winners.
  • If you have any dissatisfaction with Gate Ruler, consider that you just might not know that we've decided a solution. The development principle is "do not give up on anything". Even with moe illustrations, we might opt for "even if we don't have it in the main product, it may exist as a promo card". This is not a double standard. If its in the main product, those who don't want it can't avoid it, but if its a promo card that isn't a staple you can choose not to use it if you don't like it. As an example, if a VTuber was made into a card, it would be done in this way.
  • The last thing, the one I'd like spread the most, is that if you have any complaints or questions about Gate Ruler, please let me know directly. Gate Ruler as it is now is handled by me, the creator. Simply put, if you have any complaints, don't hide and let me know!

  • Gate Ruler Official Sleeve Project
We are planning several types, but this time we decided to make "Schrodinger's Cat" a sleeve due to the support of enthusiatic fans! Originally, this art was used in Force of Will, but since its an illustration that would look great as a sleeve, it will be made into a sleeve with the permission of the illustrator, Haniwa.

In addition, the deck is in a Schrodinger's Cat-like state, where you cannot know until you turn it over, so it has special meaning as a sleeve. Its an artistic illustration that doesn't feel out of place if used for other TCGs, so it will probably be popular. I feel that its inevitable that it will be sold out.

A huge sword that pierced into Yoyogi Park at the beginning of the Exvader's invasion. The total length is 10km.

Its fall was slowed by the magic of Volnar and the powers of the Gate Rulers. Currently, it is spacially fixed with the powers of the Gate Rulers and there is no risk of it falling. After its reconstruction, Tokyo became a big tourist destination because of it.

    "I don't like lucky elements"

It was expected from the beginning that there'd be a number of people with this attitude. So naturally, in the 2nd booster pack (I didn't put it in the 1st booster pack to make the start a bit more casual) we have prepared a Ruler called "Wizard" (tentative name) with a serious system and few elements of luck.

Though, I wonder how many "serious gamers" can win with it? After all, the prize-based game, Dimension 0, which was designed for players who said "I hate elements of luck, I want a skillful game" died off because of all the people who couldn't win.

They claimed to be "real gamers", but in the end, only casual players continued to pursue the game...

    [quote]The 2nd Playtest

All the test players were surprised by the new Ruler "Vanquisher" (meaning the "winner of the battle"). It looks like a compromise between Apprentice and Knight, but actually, the deck construction and play rules are completely different, and it reminds me of the freedom and potential of the Ruler system.

Its a fact that card games sell better if you have prominent and powerful cards. The clear communication of "you can win with this card" is needed because it gives new players the entrance to the game that they want. However, cards like that can warp the metagame and future design. In that case, what should be done?

Up until now, TCGs have limited or banned cards that are too powerful as their way of protecting the game from those adverse effects. But as time goes by, it can become "use as many powerful cards that have been limited to 1 as possible".

In Gate Ruler, the easy to understand and powerful cards have been made as Legend cards, and in addition to keeping them to 1 copy, the Legend system also limits the number of those powerful 1 copy cards that can be used. As a result, I think I've succeeded in creating diversity in decks without giving up on creating flashy and powerful cards.

Gate Ruler is a TCG made by learning from the TCGs that came before it.

    (Sources: 1 2 3)

    Gate Ruler's 1st competitive format

There should be at least 10 deck types that you'll frequently see. On top of that there should be over a dozen rogue-level decks that can be powerful in the right meta. Beyond both of those, there are countless strategies that could be made that we cannot predict. It will be hard because its so diverse, but I think competitive players who dislike polarized metagames will enjoy it.

It can't be done in other TCGs, but a well made highlander deck could win tournaments, or even the championship.

To be honest, I think the game is balanced, but its impossible to predict the metagame!

    (Sources: 1 2)

While 10 sounds very high, its the exact number a 5 color game should be aiming for as a baseline, as that's the number you need to give all the 2 color combinations a viable deck type.

    Sudden Blackhole
    ---
As was the case with Buddyfight, I'm really worried about whether the new TCG I made is "interesting". Even if it is to me, I wonder if everyone will feel the "interestingness" in the same way.

At first, I couldn't believe the people around me who were working on Gate Ruler telling me it was "interesting". Its from a subordinate, its from an employee, so they might be just claiming its interesting...That worried me. But that was a rude way to think about them. My friends, before being my subordinates, were real TCG fans who never lied, at least when it came to TCGs.

If a TCG isn't interesting, you won't have people talking about how interesting it is. Even when watching I presented the new TCG in a video, and showed interesting things, I subtly changed it in my head to "Well, I guess this might suit someone."

They unanimously call Gate Ruler "interesting", build decks, and argue about card evaluation. Sometimes even while complaining to me, the creator. Thanks to the test players and my friends, I can tell everyone who will play Gate Ruler in the future, that Gate Ruler is interesting.

Playing, deckbuilding, and the overall experience are much more interesting than you may expect. The more you like TCGs, the more you'll get out of it. I look forward to the day where you can experience it for yourself.

    New illustration released
    Wonderverse Event "Sudden Wormhole"

The card back is drawn in this illustration, so I couldn't show this one until that was revealed.

The earthling Adriano happened to have 7 cards with him when he was warped to Wonderverse. He awakened to the abilities of a Gate Ruler, and became able to realize those 7 cards at any time. As a result, he becomes a feared presence for the villains of the galaxy as Master Future Ed's companion, "Seven Card Adriano".

The world of Buddyfight is one of moratorium, where there was a grace period of 200 years before the attack of the Exvaders, and humans were able to befriend those of other worlds.

The world of Gate Ruler is one where the invasion was known about due to warnings from other worlds, but they only had 5 years to prepare.

    They are parallel settings.

    (Source)

This tweet is honestly really bizarre. To start with, what were the Exvaders of the Buddyfight world? Neither Azi Dahaka's army or the Hundred Demons seem to really fit, and the time they were known about before their invasion was way more than 200 years. Maybe the entire Exvader concept was one Ikeda had originally planned for Buddyfight?

On the other hand, we learn something new about the Gate Ruler lore, that Earth knew that the Exvaders were coming 5 years beforehand. While nothing known from the lore contradicts this, there was also nothing yet that suggested Earth knew prior to the Destiny Sword appearing and beginning the invasion. Its not hard to believe this being the case, it just means something like the ARK appearing in the Atlantic Ocean happened years earlier than previously believed.

According to the author, Misa Tutui, "it was too cute to get on track". Its an illustration that broadened the world view thanks to how over the top it is. There are many fans of it on the development team. Its card can use the "Counterattack" ability.

Flavor Text: If the opponent is caught by the strong forefeet, they'll be trapped in the quiz show. You cannot escape until you get 100 correct answers.

Congratulations and thank you to those whose influencer applications were accepted. On the day of the briefing session, everyone at the venue will be given the very rare test print version of the Gate Ruler free trial deck. In addition, those who sign non-disclosure agreements at the venue will be given various pieces of private information.

We can't give the decks or private information to those who can't come to the venue, but if the contracts can be dealt with through e-mail, we will consider giving the private information. Even if you register now, we will be able to distribute image data, so please do it.

Gate Ruler release date announced! December 26th!

Plus, there will be a limited prerelease sale on December 12th at several card game stores nationwide. You might not be able to get it without a reservation, so be sure to make a reservation at your local store. Distributors nationwide will have it, so any store can order it!

A pack where all cards from the Starter Decks and Booster Pack are available in different foiling. The price is 2400 yen for 1 pack of 13 cards! All the cards in it are foil, and each pack has 3 or more cards at 3* or higher.

The release date is December 26th, and like the main booster pack has a prerelease on December 12th. However, I think there are many shops that won't order this, so if you want it, be sure to place a reservation!

    (Sources: 1 2)

The reconfirmation of the price we saw before is pretty nice, in something intended to be public, especially given that earlier today a store posted their prices for the Starter Decks, Booster Pack, and the High Rarity Pack. Their pre-order prices were a bit lower than the previously stated MSRP and their normal prices are a bit higher than MSRP, so the knowledge that the MSRP is still where we thought is reassuring. Looking at this store's other listings, its something they tend to do in general, so nothing to worry about.

    High Rarity Pack version

    Normal 4* version

    Uber Rare version

1 is a High Rarity Pack version of a RRR, with less of a frame. 2 is a normal Booster Pack version of a RRR. In the normal boosters at a low pull rate 3 is the Uber Rare foiling (which looks like an iron plate).

    (Source)

    High Rarity Pack version

    Normal 4* version

    Uber Rare version

Another example of the foiling differences.
1 is a High Rarity Pack version of a RRR, with less of a frame. 2 is a normal Booster Pack version of a RRR. In the normal boosters at a low pull rate 3 is the Uber Rare foiling (which looks like an iron plate).

    (Source)

Its nice to now know what those "high rarity" frames are for. Honestly should've made that connection once we learned about the High Rarity packs, but alas. Its cool to know that the High Rarity pack cards will be very distinguished from the normal pack versions, in ways beyond the foiling, making each of them unique from each other.

In response to a twitter user wondering if Uber Rares existed in the High Rarity Pack, Ikeda said this:

Actually, there will be Uber Rares for Legend Cards that don't exist in the normal booster packs!

    (Source)

If you look at the Uber Rares we've seen so far, you'd notice that all of them are for 4*s. Based on their numbering, you can also see the Legend Rare Ubers are impossible, and it actually seems rather likely that all Uber Rares will be 4*s. On that note, I wonder if there are only 4 4*s for each faction, so that all of them will also be printed as Uber Rares? Given that there seem to be 2 Legends each, 4 4*s per faction seems like a good number.

Please be assured. There are no cards limited to the High Rarity pack. Its all different specifications of cards from the Starter Decks or Booster Pack. The High Rarity case bonus is just an alternate artwork card. Its an alternate art for Viola, though, so its probably worth it.

    (Source)

To tell the truth, if we were to reveal the seeding, and you compared the Normal Booster Pack and High Rarity Pack in amounts that are equal in cost, you would pull a little more RR (3*) and RRR (4*). That's why I can't say "High Rarity Packs are better".

But, after all, all the cards in the High Rarity pack are foil! That's its value, isn't it? You definitely want to foil power cards or staple cards, so I think you should buy the High Rarity Pack if you find it.

    (Sources: 1 2)

There is just one thing I'm worried about with Gate Ruler right now. "We didn't order much of the new TCG at first, so we ran out of stock in no time." This happened with Wixoss, and early on you had singles of commons for 1500 yen...So I'd like to ask for your help.

Go to stores that handle TCGs and make reservations. There's a deadline for orders, so if you don't do it soon, time might run out. Since there are retailers carrying Gate Ruler from across the nation, its practically impossible for a store to be unable to order.

If the customer speaks up, it will become "Hey, Gate Ruler seems to be popular before release. Will we carry it?". That is the driving force for everything! Do it through close by shops, to help out those card shops.

    Please spread this.

    (Sources: 1 2 3)

Its possible that we might make this kind of product.

    (Source)

To all stores. The product information for the 1st set has now been sent out, and we will send you the information for the 2nd set soon, which is scheduled to be released mid-March. In adition, the 3rd set is being planned for early summer.

The 1st set has many basic cards and will sell for a long time.
