Viola Fluvdus Full Effect!

Posted on 5th November, 2020 at 7:09pm CST
Recently, the full uncensored image of Viola Fluvdus surfaced, which came from an earlier, deleted version of Ikeda's tweet showcasing the differences between normal ★★★★, High Rarity frames, and Uber Rares, so let's talk about it!

Demon Dragon, Viola Fluvdus (2020GB01-003 ★★★★/2020GB01-UR02 ★★★★)
Faction: Volnar
Card Type: Unit
Level: 3
Attribute(s): Dragon, Dragon Lord, Darkness
Attack: 7
HP: 6
Strike: 3
Effect: [Abyss Symphonia] Condition: Put 5 "Darkness" cards including at least 1 Level 0, 1, 2, and 3 from your cemetery at the bottom of your deck.
  • Activate: [Pay 1 Energy & Discard this card from your hand] Draw 1.
  • When this is Special Summoned by [Abyss Summon], destroy all other units.
Flavor Text: Get so mad you go crazy.

  • That missing effect turned out to be a pretty big deal! This is the first ability we've seen that references Energy, but it seems quite good. Assuming Level is some sort of Energy cost, this is costed in such a way that you can put Viola in the cemetery with its own effect and still have enough to summon Priest of Demonic Dragon and Abyss Summon.

Beyond that specific combination, Viola having the ability to not just get itself in cemetery, but do so as a cantrip, is incredible good for the archetype. The other detail of course is the full details of its Abyss Symphonia condition. It did in fact require a higher total that must include the specific Levels, though not to any significant degree, only requiring 1 additional Darkness card beyond what the Level requirements already need.

The popular card from the free trial deck, Dragon-type Prototype Battle Weapon "Honoikazuchi", is actually one of eight thunder gods!

Big Thunder, Fire Thunder, Black Thunder, Clapping Thunder, Young Thunder, Earth Thunder, Ringing Thunder, Bowing Thunder

They will start to appear in the 2nd Booster Pack! Look forward to it!

Ikeda made a series of tweets elaborating on the price, pull rates, and pack size of the normal and high rarity booster pack.

I don't mean to prove that its inexpensive, as that is up to the customer, but this was my intent in making it this way: "Isn't it more valuable to get a lot of high rarity cards at a low price rather than inflating it with common cards?"

1 box costs 9000 yen, which is the exact price of 2 Duel Masters boxes. You might be convinced if you notice that the number of ★★★ is equivalent to the number of Very Rares, and the number of ★★★★ is equivalent to the number of Super Rares. In Gate Ruler, I think collecting a bulk of commons is unnecessary.

An easy to understand explanation of the High Rarity Pack
  • There are 9 cards that would normally be Common, Rare, or Starter Deck, that are not normally foil, but are all foil here
  • There are four or more ★★★, and 1 of those will always be ★★★★! There can be 2 ★★★★.
  • Unlike in the normal booster pack, the ★★★ has enlarged art that pops out of the frame, and the ★★★★ gets a special Full Art frame.
  • The Legend card is 1 per box, but has the special foiling of Uber Rares!
  • The following is not really meant as a selling point. "I'll make my entire deck shine!" To reward the dedication of such players, I thought we should have a card that only they can get, so a Case of the High Rarity Pack (50 packs) contains an exclusive alternate art version of Viola Fluvdus.

  • I think some people will dislike this but...certainly, rare cards are valuable because they are hard to pull. But I don't want to feel the "guilt of wasting resources" from a ton of extra commons coming out of the pack anymore. That's why I reduced the number of commons and increased the higher rarities.

Lastly, this was Ikeda's answer to a question regarding draft for Gate Ruler.

The rules for draft are one I think can only be done in Gate Ruler, so they can't be published yet. Plus, we also think we shouldn't tell anyone until we've tried these rules out for ourselves after the pack is produced.
But it might be super interesting.
