Beast and Apparition Support!

Posted on 29th November, 2020 at 2:30pm CST
Before we get into today's article, our team has finished creating an OCTGN plugin for Gate Ruler. Check out this article for a guide on how to set it up.

Today's 1st influencer reveal comes from this Ako Hanabayashi video, and reveals a new Yomajin Front unit, "Tenrou the Ushi-oni".

Tenrou the Ushi-oni
Card Number: 2020GB01-073 ★★
Faction: Yomajin Front
Card Type: Unit
Level: 2
Attribute(s): Apparition, Beast
ATK: 3
HP: 3
STK: 1
Effect: [OD] "Parade of Hundred Demons Lv1" Look at the top card of your deck, and if it's a Level 1 or less «Apparition» unit, you may Drive it. If you do not Drive it, put it on the bottom of the deck.
Flavor Text: The youkai said, "Return the night to us. Return the soothing darkness you took."
The governor of Tokyo you replied, "We'll give you rolling blackouts from midnight."

With this, we are starting to see the archetypal support for Apparitions, one of the prominent Yomajin Front attributes! A very powerful effect that allows a Drive Ruler to generate more card advantage, something that they are notably denied by comparison to Hand Rulers. Well worth the significant hit to stats it takes for this effect. Some of the best targets we currently know are "Late-night Police Officer, Yobuko" from Starter Deck 1, who can then hit a set and generate more card advantage, or "Sakura no Sei" (previously translated as "Nature of Cherry Blossoms"), who can destroy an opposing Field and create a very difficult to deal with center line. "Kamaitachi Joe", as one of the best Level 0 vanillas, is also a great target, and Apparition's significant overlap with the Beast attribute could make mixing with Volnar and running "Forest of Killers" (another card from today that we'll discuss a bit later) very valuable.

One last note is the ability name including "Lv1", which corresponds with the effect only being able to drive Level 1 or lower Apparitions. Perhaps this indicates that this effect will be fairly common in Apparitions, and we'll see other cards with higher or lower level versions?

The 2nd and last influencer reveal from today is Wonderverse unit "Space Journalist, Christel", showcased in this video from Romi Hoshjino.

Space Journalist, Christel
Card Number: 2020GB01-100 ★★★
Faction: Wonderverse
Card Type: Unit
Level: 1
Attribute(s): Futuremen
Attack: 2
HP: 2
Strike: 1
Effect: [TD] Look at the top two cards of your deck, and you may set 1 card card among them that can be set. Put the remaining cards on the bottom of your deck.
Flavor Text: She realizes that the mysterious King Arthur's battles center around the Velocto. She forces her way into the ship to investigate.

A very similar card to Starter Deck 1's "Late-night Police Officer, Yobuko". However, in exchange for being 1 higher in Level, despite the same statline, Christel is able to check 2 cards to make it much more reliable, it also gets it as a Touchdown effect, allowing Hand Rulers to utilize the effect! That latter application feels like the much more relevant part, as it'll allow Hand Rulers to accumulate further card advantage and double down on their Ruler's strength.

Past the influencer reveals, we have several new cards from Ikeda! First up, two more of the Set 2 preview cards featured in the Set 1 promo cards.

Yamata no Orochi
Card Number: GPR-12
Faction: Yomajin Front
Card Type: Unit
Level: 2
Attribute(s): Apparition, Dragon
Attack: 0
HP: 6
Strike: 1
Effect: ■ Normal [Turn (1)] Choose 1 enemy unit, and deal 2 damage to it. (This effect can be used in the defensive zone)
Flavor Text: He believes in his resurrection. That a foolish human being seeking his power will break the seal.

(Source)

While its unconfirmed, [Turn(1)] is likely a once per turn restriction. Interestingly, the keyword is structured in a way that would make it easy to do twice per turn, three times per turn, etc. restrictions. Regardless, its a very powerful defensive card. Either put it in your defensive zone where it can act as removal despite being unable to attack, while walling your opponent with its high HP, or put it to the site to pressure your opponent into needing to clear a high HP side lest it continues to activate its effect damage turn after turn!

Liar Moon
Card Number: GPR-14
Faction: Exvaders
Card Type: Unit
Level: 3
Attribute(s): Object
Attack: 5
HP: 5
Strike: 1
Effect: ■ "Phantom Nightmare" When this is normal summoned, choose an <Exvaders> card with [CNT] from your cemetery, use that card's [CNT] effect, and put it to the bottom of your deck.
Flavor Text: Among the Exvader weapons, it set a record for the amount of damage done due to the discovery being delayed, because everyone thought it was a normal moon.

(Source)

While the stats are low, the effect is extremely strong! Activating a [CNT] effect at will, and then putting it back into deck to potentially heal you later in the game. Especially notable is that Exvaders have multiple hard removal effects in their [CNT]. While "White Bone Princess" allows your opponent to choose the target, "Destiny Sword" has been described as similar to Duel Master's "Terror Pit", so its likely a hard removal with a [CNT] to activate that effect. The two combined would give "Liar Moon" good redundancy that should allow it to consistently be yet another copy of hard removal, which more than makes up for its low stats for a Level 3.

Forest of Killers
Card Number: 2020GB01-013 ★★
Faction: Volnar
Level: 2
Card Type: Field
Attribute(s): Magic
Effect: [CNT] Choose one of the following:
・If there is no "Forest of Killers" in your field zone, put this in your field zone.
・Choose 1 Level 0 enemy unit and destroy it.
■ Your «Beast» get ATK+1 and HP+1.
Flavor Text: There is no justice or evil, no holy or demonic. There is just natural life.

From today I will also reveal cards! Follow & Retweet, its nice to meet you.

This is today's! Field Card "Forest of Killers". The key card of "Beast Beatdown", the natural enemy of control decks! Pay close attention to Beasts in the future! (Kamaitachi, Wolverine, etc.)

(Source)

An extremely powerful Field card! Its CNT is interesting in that its both restrictive and versatile. It prevents you from getting more than one copy of it into play for free, but also provides a good removal option. As for the buff, we can already see many places where it seems very relevant. "Kamaitachi Joe" becomes a 6/3, despite its already very impressive 5/2 statline, making it capable of taking out all but the beefiest of Level 3s! "Tenrou the Ushi-oni" reaches the valuable 4/4 statline, the power of which should be easily understood by anyone who has played with the Demo Deck. Also, interesting to note is that Beast is an attribute that appears across 4 different factions, so this may be an archetype that functions well under a World Master.

Gate Ruler Trivia.

The numbers spread between ATK, HP, and STK are generally 9 for Level 0, but for STK, 1 point is worth 2, 2 is worth 4, 3 is worth 7, etc.

Also, having 3 attributes will cost a stat point, and specific attributes might cost stat points too.

Of course, this isn't all absolute either.

Bulltaurus
Card Number: 2020GB01-021 ★
Faction: Volnar
Card Type: Unit
Level: 1
Attribute(s): Earth, Beast
ATK: 4
HP: 4
STK: 2
Flavor Text: "The minotaur is also a myth on the earth. No, its not a modern one, that's true..." Yamada, Commander of the Volnar Dispatch Unit of the Yomajin Front
---
If you read "Bulltaurus" applying the stat formula, you can see that a Level 1 unit gets 12 points.

Beast's boss unit is a ★★★★! But other than that, I think its a relatively cheap deck. That ★★★★ can only work in the Beast deck, so it won't be expensive either unless Beast becomes super popular.

(Source)

The boss unit of Beast is...this card! I'll reveal the effect tomorrow. Not just the illustration, but the effect is so cool it'll give you nosebleeds!

By the way, in the test play 6 months ago, the deck that people had the most difficulty playing was the Beast deck. Its has a simple and exciting Beatdown framework, but it also has a depth of options to be chosen from depending on the metagame.

What I learned from listening to the shops.
"We're waiting on Gate Ruler because we don't understand it much yet."
There are many shops like this. (Despite this, there are over 550 shops carrying the game)

I regret that I couldn't tell you a bit more, but the reality is for any new TCG published by any company, "I can't understand until its released", so everyone should be careful. I think its natural to do that.
