Photon Torpedo Effect Reveal

Posted on 3rd September, 2020 at 3:50pm CST
Following up from September 1st, Ikeda showed test prints for the other three factions - ATLAS, Volnar, and Wonderverse - yesterday. Among this were new finalized effect details and new artworks, so we're going to take a look at those and then translate Ikeda's accompanying tweets afterwards.

Vampire Soldier, Levan (2020TD01-002)
Faction: ATLAS
Level: 1
Card Type: Unit
Race(s): OWL, Darkness, Military
Attack: 2
HP: 2
Strike: 2
Effect: [OD] [TD] "Future Sight" Look at the top card of your deck, and you may put it back on top or on the bottom of your deck.
Flavor Text: I understand. The extinction of human race would be inconvenient for us. On that note, does that "enemy" shed blood?

First up we have the ATLAS test print, featuring the previously shown Vampire Soldier, Levan. Nothing has changed here aside from the change in collection code. This could be seen in the earlier test prints, but we didn't comment on it then. Instead of TD01, it is now 2020TD01. This change is a bit weird, especially since TD01 is a Demo Deck, and its hard to imagine multiple of those releasing a year, so 2020TD seems like it would work just fine. Perhaps the year being at the front of the product code will be universal?

Knight of Oath Blade (2020TD01-005)
Faction: Volnar
Card Type: Unit
Level: 0
Race(s): Warrior
Attack: 3
HP: 3
Strike: 1
Flavor Text: "Volnar" is a fantastic world where all living things have magical powers.
It is said to be a resting place for all living things, across dimensions and for the soul.

Next up is the Volnar test print. While this might appear to be a new card, with its new name and new art, its actually just the Warriors of Continuous Battle we saw previously. The functionality, flavor text, and even the collection code (again, barring the new 2020 at the start) are all identical. With that said, Warriors of Continuous Battle has been moved to the Beta Cards article and Knight of Oath Blade has taken its place in the Revealed Cards article.

Space Adventurer, Ed
Faction: Wonderverse
Card Type: Unit
Level: 0
Race(s): Futuremen
Attack: 1
HP: 1
Strike: ? [this stat is cut off]
Effect: [CNT] Use this card's [OD] effect.
[OD] (OD is an effect that activates when you play a Drive)... [the rest of the effect is cut off]

Photon Torpedo (2020TD01-009)
Faction: Wonderverse
Card Type: Event
Level: 2
Race(s): Military
Effect: [CNT] Use this card.
Activation Timing: Immediate (You can set and use this card at any time)
Choose one of the following effects.
  • Deal 1 damage to your opponent.
  • Destroy 1 set card on your opponent's field.
Flavor Text: A meeting of magic and science, a rhythmic beat that resounds through space! This nostalgic, pop world of science fiction is the Wonderverse!

  • Lastly, we have the Wonderverse test frame! First off, with this all 5 factions are confirmed to be present in the Demo Deck. As we've talked about before, this implies some fairly forgiving faction restrictions. Ed is likely a TD01 card since everything else in the test prints is, but also worth noting is that the details we see here are near identical to one of the previously assumed Beta versions. Here's that effect as a refresher.

    Name: Master Future Ed
    Faction: Wonderverse
    Card Type: Unit
    Level: 0
    Race(s): Futuremen
    Attack: 1
    HP: 1
    Strike: 1
Effect: [CNT] Use this card's [OD] effect.
[OD] (OD is an effect that activates when you play a Drive) "Atomic Destruction Ray" Deal 1 damage to an enemy unit.

You can also of course see that his name has changed. Though the reason could be something like Ed will get multiple cards, and the "Master Future Ed" name is being saved for something in the 1st set rather than given away freely in the Demo Deck, perhaps something high rarity. Though that's just speculation.

There's not much else to say, with Photon Torpedo what you see is what you get. Doesn't really tell us anything we hadn't already observed in the Rules compilation & speculation article. The presence of the Activation Timing does at least tell us that there will be other types of timings on Events.

With all that out of the way, let's translate Ikeda's tweets. First up, the tweets on the Wonderverse test prints.

"I knew there were definitely pros and cons in the card frame for Wonderverse, but I dared to challenge it anyways.
Especially young people might say, "Old! Its like a toy!"
However its not cheap but anachro. It is a design that perfectly expresses the world setting and tries to reproduce the nostalgia and "coolness of those days".
It is by no means a cheap design.
If you look closely, you can see that the motif is a TV CRT.
There are actually many people who will see this and think "This is cool, I want to use it!"
The theme we want to cherish is diversity." (Sources: 1 2)

"Even when I was developing Buddyfight, and designed the card frames for all the Worlds, I thought that I would like to try using shocking pink one day.
It doesn't match any illustration, but it is a beautiful and impactful color.
Thanks to the designer who placed black on both ends, the frame was really tightened up." (Source)

Next up, Ikeda's tweet on the Volnar card frame.

"The most difficult card frame design was Volnar.
Because it is a typical fantasy world, rather than novelty, we aimed for an elaborate and easy to see design.
Since the card name looks small due to font issues, I will expand it a little for the final product." (Source)

And last up, Ikeda's tweet on the ATLAS card frame.

"The ATLAS frame has a futuristic and metallic theme.
On high rarity cards in the final product version, it will be a unique frame with illustrations on the frame to make it flashy.
Others are elaborate with a texture that you can't understand unless you see it in person, and so on...!" (Source)
